Blue Jays ride early power and Soriano’s seven steady innings past Athletics, 4-2

The Blue Jays did their damage in two bursts and got the pitching to make it stand up, beating the Athletics 4-2 on Tuesday at Sutter Health Park.

Toronto scored twice in the second inning, then added two more in the sixth to back José Soriano, who worked seven innings for the win. Soriano allowed six hits and two earned runs, walked one and struck out three on 89 pitches. After he exited, Spencer Miles closed it out with two spotless innings, striking out three and not allowing a hit for his second save.

Toronto’s lineup produced 11 hits, with Josh Smith and Kazuma Okamoto each going 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored and an RBI. Alejandro Kirk added an RBI, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. finished 2-for-4 with a run.

The Athletics got on the board with single runs in the fourth and seventh. Donovan Walton and Carlos Cortes each homered, and Henry Bolte collected two hits. But Oakland could not string together much beyond the solo shots, and was held scoreless in every other inning.

Jack Perkins took the loss, charged with four earned runs on seven hits over five innings.
