Early homers and Roupp’s six scoreless innings lift Giants past Cardinals, 2-1

The Giants did all of their scoring early and made it stand Tuesday night at Oracle Park, beating the Cardinals 2-1.

San Francisco grabbed control with a pair of solo home runs against Quinn Mathews. Christian Koss opened the scoring in the first inning, then Bryce Eldridge added another in the second. That was enough support for Landen Roupp, who worked six scoreless innings to earn the win despite issuing four walks. Roupp allowed just two hits and struck out two over 81 pitches.

Mathews settled in after the early damage and finished with a solid line of his own: six innings, five hits, two earned runs, two walks and four strikeouts. Gordon Graceffo kept St. Louis within a run by throwing two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

The Cardinals finally broke through in the ninth. Nathan Church scored the club’s only run, and Bryan Torres drove him in as St. Louis cut the deficit to 2-1. But Joel Kuhnel, after allowing two hits and the run over 1 1/3 innings, finished it off for his seventh save.

St. Louis managed five hits, while San Francisco’s offense was carried by the two early swings.
