Astros hold off late Phillies rally for 6-5 win at Citizens Bank Park
Houston did its damage early and then survived the finish, beating Philadelphia 6-5 on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park.
The Astros put the game in motion with a four-run second inning and added another run in the fourth to build a 5-0 lead. That cushion proved decisive. Andrew Painter was charged with five runs on 10 hits over five innings, and Houston’s lineup kept pressure on him throughout.
Daulton Varsho, Cam Smith and Christian Walker all homered for the Astros. Varsho finished 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, Walker went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Smith scored twice.
Philadelphia finally broke through against Hayden Wesneski in the sixth, scoring three times to cut the deficit to 5-3. The Phillies added another run in the seventh, but Houston answered with an insurance run in the top half of the inning. That extra run loomed large when the Phillies scored once more in the ninth against Josh Hader before the Astros closer finished off his 24th save.
Wesneski earned the win after allowing three runs over six innings without a walk. Trea Turner led Philadelphia with two hits and two RBIs, including a home run.
