Pirates bury White Sox early with 18-hit outburst in 9-3 win
The Pirates decided this one in a hurry Tuesday night at Rate Field, hammering the White Sox for seven runs in the first two innings on the way to a 9-3 victory.
Pittsburgh scored five times in the first and added two more in the second, putting Sean Burke in an immediate bind. Burke lasted just 1.1 innings and was charged with seven runs on eight hits and two walks. By the time Chicago settled in behind Tyler Schweitzer, the game had already tilted heavily toward the visitors.
The Pirates finished with 18 hits and got production throughout the lineup. Oneil Cruz went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, Bryan Reynolds was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, Spencer Horwitz drove in three, and Rafael Flores Jr. went 3-for-5 with a homer.
That early support was more than enough for Bubba Chandler. The Pittsburgh starter worked six innings, allowed four hits and two runs, struck out eight and did not issue a walk. Chicago managed only single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Kyle Teel provided one bright spot for the White Sox, going 2-for-3 with a home run, while Andrew Benintendi had two hits and scored twice.
