Diamondbacks outlast Royals 5-3 in 11 after late leads vanish twice

A scoreless game turned wild late, and Arizona finally had the last answer in a 5-3, 11-inning win over Kansas City on Tuesday at Kauffman Stadium.

The Diamondbacks didn’t score until the eighth, then kept pushing even as two separate leads disappeared. Arizona went ahead 1-0 in the eighth and 2-0 in the ninth, only to see the Royals score twice in the bottom of the ninth against Juan Morillo and force extras.

Arizona moved back in front with a run in the 10th, but Kansas City answered again in the bottom half. Blake Walston was charged with a blown save there, though the run was unearned, and he recovered to finish two innings for the win.

The decisive swing came in the 11th, when Arizona scored twice against Anthony Gose. Tim Tawa led the offense, going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. Ketel Marte drove in a run, scored once and reached twice by walk, while Lourdes Gurriel Jr. also had an RBI.

Arizona’s pitching was otherwise excellent. Corbin Burnes started with three scoreless innings, and the Diamondbacks carried a shutout into the ninth before surviving the late push.
