Athletics make two early runs stand up in 2-0 shutout of Blue Jays

The Athletics did all of their scoring by the fourth inning and let their pitching do the rest in a 2-0 win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday at Sutter Health Park.

Toronto actually finished with more hits, 6-4, but never found the timely one against a five-man Athletics staff. Brady Basso opened with four scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out four. Scott Blewett followed with two scoreless innings to earn the win, and Luis Medina, Hogan Harris and Elvis Alvarado finished the shutout. Alvarado worked the ninth for his sixth save.

The game turned against Michael Lorenzen, who took the loss after allowing both Athletics runs over 2.2 innings. The Athletics broke through with single runs in the third and fourth innings. Henry Bolte provided the biggest swing, going 1-for-4 with a home run and the game’s lone RBI. Tommy White also scored, while Max Muncy reached three times and collected two of the club’s four hits.

Toronto put runners on throughout the night, getting hits from Brett Bateman, Charles McAdoo, Nathan Lukes, Alejandro Kirk and Andrés Giménez, but never pushed a run across. After Lorenzen exited, the Blue Jays bullpen kept the deficit at two, but the offense could not answer.

  • ATH beat TOR 2-0 despite being outhit 6-4.
  • Henry Bolte’s home run accounted for the Athletics’ only RBI, and the club scored once in the third and once in the fourth.
  • The Athletics combined for a nine-inning shutout behind four scoreless innings from Brady Basso and a save from Elvis Alvarado.
