Giants outlast Cardinals 5-4 in 11 innings at Oracle Park

The Giants did just enough to protect an early lead, survive a late St. Louis rally and finish off a 5-4 win in 11 innings Monday at Oracle Park.

San Francisco built a 3-0 advantage through five innings, with Bryce Eldridge driving in three runs and Rafael Devers reaching base four times on two hits and two walks. Shay Whitcomb also drove in a run as the Giants collected 10 hits.

That cushion nearly disappeared against a stubborn Cardinals comeback. Logan Webb was sharp for San Francisco, allowing one run on three hits over six innings while striking out eight, but St. Louis chipped away after he left. Alec Burleson homered and scored twice, while Nathan Church and Leo Bernal each added an RBI as the Cardinals tied it, 3-3, with a run in the ninth.

St. Louis then grabbed its first lead in the 10th on José Fermín’s RBI, but Riley O’Brien was charged with a blown save when the Giants answered immediately in the bottom half.

In the 11th, San Francisco pushed across the winning run against George Soriano. The Giants’ offense was steady throughout, and the Cardinals’ inability to turn San Francisco’s chances into outs proved costly: only two of the Giants’ five runs were earned.
