Padres build early cushion, then hang on to beat Nationals 3-2

The Padres did all of their scoring in the first three innings, then leaned on their bullpen to finish a 3-2 win over the Nationals on Monday at Petco Park.

San Diego struck for one run in the first and added two more in the third, giving Nick Pivetta enough support to work five scoreless innings. Pivetta allowed just two hits, walked none and struck out two in a tidy 63-pitch outing.

Washington finally broke through in the sixth when Dylan Crews connected for a two-run homer, accounting for all of the Nationals’ offense. Crews finished 2-for-4 with both RBIs, while Abimelec Ortiz scored one of the two runs.

That rally came against Kyle Hart, but San Diego’s late relief group shut the door from there. Bradgley Rodriguez, Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller combined for three scoreless innings, with Miller earning his 34th save after allowing one hit in the ninth.

Jackson Merrill led the Padres’ offense by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Fernando Tatis Jr. also had three hits, and Manny Machado went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI as San Diego out-hit Washington 9-5.
