Diamondbacks survive wild 10th after 18 scoreless innings to beat Royals 5-4
For nine innings at Kauffman Stadium, Arizona and Kansas City traded zeros. Then everything broke loose at once.
The Diamondbacks scored all five of their runs in the top of the 10th and held on for a 5-4 win over the Royals on Tuesday, overcoming a late scare after a game dominated by pitching.
Kansas City had been in control on the mound most of the night. Noah Cameron worked six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out seven, and Nate Pearson plus Steven Cruz finished the shutout through nine. But Craig Kimbrel could not protect that in the 10th, surrendering five runs — four earned — on five hits in one inning.
Arizona’s offense finally broke through behind a balanced rally. Gabriel Moreno and Nolan Arenado each had two hits and an RBI, while Geraldo Perdomo added a run and an RBI. Ildemaro Vargas and Ketel Marte also scored.
The Diamondbacks’ own bullpen effort was nearly enough to make the 10th unnecessary. Derek Law, Jose Cabrera, Taylor Clarke, Brandyn Garcia and Justin Martinez combined for nine scoreless innings before Gerardo Carrillo was tagged for four runs in the bottom of the 10th. Dennis Santana got the final two outs for his third save.
