Rays back Griffin Jax with early outburst, beat Braves 7-2 at Truist Park

The Rays did their damage early and never let Atlanta back into the game, beating the Braves 7-2 on Wednesday at Truist Park.

Tampa Bay broke it open with two big innings against Reynaldo López, scoring three times in the second and adding three more in the fourth. That was more than enough for Griffin Jax, who worked 5.0 innings and allowed just one run on two hits to earn the win.

Victor Mesa Jr. helped set the tone for the Rays, going 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs scored and an RBI. Jorge Mateo drove in two, while Yandy Díaz, Liam Hicks and Cedric Mullins added one RBI apiece as Tampa Bay finished with 10 hits.

López lasted 4.2 innings and was charged with six earned runs on seven hits and three walks in the loss.

Atlanta managed only three hits all night. Drake Baldwin supplied much of the offense, going 1-for-3 with a homer, one RBI, a walk and both Braves runs scored. Matt Olson added an RBI despite going hitless.

The Braves scratched out single runs in the fourth and sixth, but Tampa Bay answered with another run in the seventh and then closed it down. Cole Sulser and Steven Matz combined for the final three hitless innings.

  • Tampa Bay took control with two three-run innings, in the second and fourth, and never trailed in a 7-2 win.
  • Griffin Jax gave the Rays 5.0 strong innings, allowing one run on two hits for the victory.
  • Atlanta was held to three hits; Drake Baldwin homered and scored both Braves runs.
