Pirates break it open in seventh, hold off White Sox for 4-2 win

The Pirates turned a tight game with one swing and one timely rally Wednesday night, beating the White Sox 4-2 at Rate Field.

Pittsburgh led just 1-0 through six innings after Esmerlyn Valdez supplied the game’s first run with a solo homer in the fifth off Davis Martin. Martin otherwise kept the White Sox in it, allowing four hits and one run over five innings, but the game shifted when the Chicago bullpen took over.

In the seventh, the Pirates pushed across three runs against Sean Newcomb. Konnor Griffin drove in two, and Rafael Flores Jr. added another RBI as Pittsburgh stretched the lead to 4-0.

That cushion proved important. Munetaka Murakami answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh, and the White Sox pulled closer in the eighth on Sam Antonacci’s RBI. Chicago put together eight hits, including two from Randal Grichuk, but could not complete the comeback.

Pittsburgh’s pitching was pieced together by eight arms after Lake Bachar lasted 1.2 innings. Brandon Eisert stabilized the game with 2.1 hitless innings and five strikeouts to earn the win, and Mason Montgomery finished it with a scoreless ninth for his 11th save.
