Burleson’s 3-RBI sixth lifts Cardinals past White Sox, 3-1
Unlike the pregame outlook, the White Sox did get a clear start from David Sandlin — but the game still turned on one inning, as St. Louis erased an early deficit with a three-run sixth and beat Chicago 3-1 on Sunday at Busch Stadium.
Chicago scored first in the second when Chase Meidroth drove in Andrew Benintendi, and Michael McGreevy spent the rest of his six innings keeping that damage contained. The Cardinals right-hander allowed three hits, one run, walked three and struck out six to earn the win.
Sandlin was just as effective for much of the afternoon. He held St. Louis scoreless into the sixth and finished with five strikeouts over 5.2 innings, but all three runs charged to him came in that deciding frame. None were earned. Alec Burleson delivered the key blow, driving in all three Cardinals runs. Nathan Church scored one of them and finished with two of St. Louis’ four hits, while Masyn Winn added a hit and a run scored.
After McGreevy exited, Gordon Graceffo and George Soriano closed it out. Graceffo covered two hitless innings with three strikeouts, and Soriano worked through a shaky ninth for his save.
