Schlittler, two solo homers carry Yankees past Mets, 2-0
Cam Schlittler and the Yankees made the pregame pitching storyline hold up Sunday, riding six scoreless innings from the starter to a 2-0 win over the Mets at Yankee Stadium.
In a game with only six total hits, the Yankees did all of their scoring on two swings. Ben Rice and Austin Wells each hit a solo homer, accounting for New York’s runs in the first and third innings. That was enough support for Schlittler, who allowed just one hit and two walks over 6.0 innings while striking out eight on 94 pitches.
The Mets got a solid outing from Christian Scott, but the two early runs stood up as the difference. Scott worked 6.0 innings, gave up three hits, struck out seven and was charged with both runs. Nate Lavender and Austin Warren then combined for 2.0 scoreless innings to keep New York within reach.
But the Mets never found an opening against the Yankees’ bullpen. Brent Headrick and Paul Blackburn each put up a scoreless inning before David Bednar finished it for his 34th save. Bo Bichette, Francisco Alvarez and Brett Baty had the Mets’ three hits.
