White Sox vs. Guardians Preview: Half a Game Separates the AL Central Leaders
Half a game separates Chicago and Cleveland at the top of the AL Central. By mid-September, the standings provide all the introduction this matchup needs.
The White Sox come to Progressive Field at 77–74, with the Guardians directly behind them at 77–75. Chicago has had the better offense over the course of the season, averaging 4.69 runs per game to Cleveland’s 4.11, and the White Sox have won seven of the first 12 meetings between the teams.
Cleveland has a clear chance to counter that advantage on the mound.
Parker Messick has worked 172.1 innings with a 2.51 ERA, 3.12 FIP and 1.03 WHIP. He has struck out 9.3 hitters per nine while keeping both his walk and home-run rates under control.
Anthony Kay has had a more difficult season for Chicago. His 4.53 ERA comes with a 4.82 FIP and 1.37 WHIP, giving Cleveland the stronger starting-pitching profile going into the afternoon.
The game could tighten considerably once the starters are gone. Chicago’s bullpen owns a 3.65 ERA, sixth-best in MLB, while Cleveland is right behind at 3.67. There is almost nothing between the relief groups by season run prevention.
That puts extra value on what happens early. The Guardians have the stronger starter; the White Sox have produced more offense.
Chicago has stumbled recently at 3–7 over its last 10, while Cleveland is 5–5. The White Sox still own the season-series advantage, but there is no room in the standings for either club to absorb much of a slide.
One afternoon will not decide the AL Central. It can change which team wakes up Thursday in first place.
