Five-run fifth sends Marlins past Cubs 10-3 at loanDepot park

The Marlins turned a close game into a rout with a five-run fifth inning Sunday, beating the Cubs 10-3 at loanDepot park.

Miami built its lead steadily, scoring twice in the second, adding another run in the fourth, then breaking through against Clay Holmes in the fifth. Holmes was charged with eight earned runs on six hits and three walks in 4.1 innings as Chicago fell behind for good. Colin Rea followed and allowed two more runs over 2.2 innings.

The Marlins’ lineup had production throughout. Heriberto Hernández went 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Javier Sanoja also homered and drove in two. Joe Mack and Owen Caissie each added two RBIs, and Otto Lopez finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Chicago scored once in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings but never put together a big response. Pete Crow-Armstrong provided the loudest swing for the Cubs, going 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.

Tyler Phillips gave Miami five innings for the win, allowing three runs on five hits. From there, four Marlins relievers combined to throw four scoreless innings to close out the 10-3 victory.
