Cardinals erase early five-run hole, outlast Rockies 10-8 at Coors Field

The Cardinals dug out of an early deficit with one explosive inning, then held on late for a 10-8 win over the Rockies on Sunday at Coors Field.

Colorado jumped ahead 2-0 in the first and extended the lead to 5-1 in the third against Kyle Leahy, who allowed five earned runs in 2.2 innings despite striking out six. Mickey Moniak drove in four runs for the Rockies, and Jake McCarthy added three RBIs.

But the game turned in the fifth. St. Louis erupted for six runs, chasing Tanner Gordon and handing Jimmy Herget the loss as a 5-1 deficit became a 7-5 Cardinals lead. Iván Herrera finished 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs, Alec Burleson also had three hits, and Leo Bernal and Nolan Gorman each drove in two. Gorman homered, and Joshua Báez went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a walk.

The biggest pitching swing came from Cooper Hjerpe, who followed the shaky start with four hitless, scoreless innings and six strikeouts to earn the win. St. Louis added three more runs in the eighth, which proved necessary as Colorado scored once in the eighth and twice in the ninth before George Soriano recorded the final out for his third save.
