Padres’ early power surge holds up in 4-3 win over Yankees

The Padres did all of their damage with the long ball and then survived a late push, beating the Yankees 4-3 on Sunday at Petco Park.

San Diego scored three times in the first inning and never trailed. Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Luis Campusano were among the Padres hitters to homer, and San Diego finished with four solo shots overall. The last of them came in the seventh, giving the Padres a 4-0 cushion.

That was enough support for Michael King, who blanked New York across six innings. King allowed four hits, walked three and struck out three to earn the win, and Bradgley Rodriguez followed with a clean seventh.

The Yankees finally broke through in the eighth against Adrian Morejon, who was charged with three runs, two earned, in one inning. Spencer Jones drove in a run, Amed Rosario added an RBI, and New York pulled within one after being shut out through seven.

But the comeback stopped there. Mason Miller worked the ninth for his 33rd save, allowing no hits while striking out three.

Gerrit Cole took the loss despite giving the Yankees length, going seven innings with four runs allowed and no walks.
