Friday’s 14-game slate has a little bit of everything, but the pitching card is what drives the day: two featured matchups with very different shapes, one built around frontline run prevention in Detroit and the other around a clear edge for San Francisco under the lights at Oracle Park.

The top billing goes to Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers, where Sean Newcomb and Jackson Jobe bring a fascinating contrast into a division-rivalry setting. Newcomb’s 2.66 ERA and 1.13 WHIP suggest a starter who has largely kept damage under control even with a merely solid 8.39 K/9 and a walk rate that can still create traffic. On the other side, Jobe’s line jumps off the page immediately: a 0.00 ERA, 0.40 WHIP, and 1.80 BB/9 through his early work. With no recent-start logs available, the season line itself is the clearest indicator here, and it paints tonight as a test of whether Newcomb can continue limiting contact quality against a Detroit club getting elite baseline prevention from its starter. If Jobe is anywhere close to that current level again, the Tigers hold the obvious mound advantage, but Newcomb has pitched well enough overall to keep this from feeling one-sided.

Colorado at San Francisco is the other featured game, and this one reads much more like a pressure spot for the Rockies. Kyle Freeland enters at 6.63 ERA and 1.50 WHIP, numbers that leave very little margin for error in a park and matchup where San Francisco can afford to play from ahead. Landen Roupp has not been dominant across the full season, carrying a 4.22 ERA and 1.29 WHIP, but his 8.95 K/9 gives the Giants a more reliable swing-and-miss foundation than Colorado gets from Freeland. Again, recent-start data is unavailable, so the broader trend has to come from the season profile: Freeland has struggled to suppress baserunners and runs over time, while Roupp’s strikeout ability gives San Francisco the better path to controlling innings. In a game tagged for standings stakes, that gap matters.

Kansas City Royals at Los Angeles Angels is notable because Seth Lugo’s 4.41 ERA gives Kansas City a clear edge over Grayson Rodriguez’s 7.20 in a game where the standings angle raises the importance of simply getting competent innings. St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs stands out because Clay Holmes, at 2.86 ERA, gives the Cubs a substantial advantage over Matthew Liberatore’s 5.15 in a rivalry game that could turn quickly if the mismatch plays to form. New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays earns mention because Gerrit Cole’s 3.35 ERA is the steadier side of a division matchup against Shane Bieber’s 5.48. Washington Nationals at New York Mets is on the board because Andrew Alvarez’s 3.76 ERA looks like a major edge over Robert Stock’s 10.13 in another rivalry spot.

The pitching spotlight lands on Jackson Jobe, whose 0.00 ERA is the best mark among the featured and notable starters and makes him the most compelling arm on the board entering Friday night.

It’s a strong slate for anyone watching the mound first, and Detroit’s featured showdown feels like the best place to start.
