Thursday’s 13-game slate has a little bit of everything, but the night is anchored by two featured spots that could swing playoff positioning while also putting very different pitching profiles under the microscope.
Athletics at Tigers stands out first because it looks like a volatility matchup on one side and a stabilizing opportunity on the other. Jack Perkins brings real swing-and-miss with an 11.52 K/9, and the recent game log shows why he’s so difficult to project: he punched out eight while getting tagged for seven earned runs in just 3.2 innings last time out, after a steadier five-inning, two-run effort and then a five-inning, four-run start before that. The strikeout weapon is intact, but the run prevention has bounced around start to start, which is a dangerous formula against a Detroit club with standings pressure attached to this game. Framber Valdez hasn’t exactly been cruising either, allowing five runs, then four runs, before a much sharper six-inning, one-run outing on June 22. That recent pattern suggests a veteran still searching for consistency rather than dominance, and with a total of 9.0, this game may come down to which starter can limit the crooked inning rather than which one controls the game cleanly.
Rockies at Giants is the other featured matchup, and the spotlight there is on Ryan Feltner’s hot stretch. He has quietly stacked three straight quality-looking outings, working six innings in each while allowing two, one, and two earned runs, and the most encouraging sign may be that he’s done it in different ways: nine strikeouts in his latest, then a zero-strikeout outing where he still kept Colorado in the game, then another efficient six frames with just two runs allowed. That kind of adaptability matters in a division rivalry game with standings stakes, especially in Oracle Park. San Francisco’s starter is still TBD, so the early edge in clarity belongs to Colorado simply because Feltner is carrying the better recent form into first pitch.
Cleveland Guardians at Minnesota Twins is a notable AL Central matchup because Gavin Williams’ 3.89 ERA gives Cleveland the cleaner front-end profile in a game with direct standings implications against Bailey Ober and the Twins. Chicago Cubs at Baltimore Orioles is notable because David Peterson’s 6.75 ERA makes this look like a potential Baltimore advantage on paper, but Trevor Rogers’ 4.70 mark and the high 10.0 total leave room for offense on both sides. Arizona Diamondbacks at San Diego Padres earns its spot because Merrill Kelly and Griffin Canning have both been hittable, creating an 8.5 total game that fits the urgency of a division rivalry with standings stakes. Seattle Mariners at Miami Marlins is the clearest mismatch of the notable group, with Bryce Miller’s excellent 1.71 ERA setting a very different tone than Janson Junk’s 4.80.
The pitching spotlight goes to Miller, whose 1.71 ERA is the best mark among the featured and notable starters and makes Seattle’s game one of the most straightforward handicap angles on the board.
It’s a strong Thursday card, but the biggest answers may come from whether the featured starters can turn uneven recent trends into a clean, winning night.
