Monday’s eight-game slate is compact, but it still gives us a couple of strong pitching storylines to center the day around, especially with one afternoon mismatch and one late-night NL West matchup carrying real intrigue.

The featured game is Arizona Diamondbacks at San Diego Padres, where Walker Buehler’s recent form is the key question in a division rivalry with standings stakes. Buehler’s overall 4.61 ERA and 1.38 WHIP are solid enough, but his last three starts tell a more volatile story: he followed back-to-back strong outings of 5.1 innings and one earned run against both June 20 and June 26 with a blowup on July 1, when he was tagged for nine earned runs in four innings. That makes tonight less about his season line and more about whether that last start was a one-off interruption or a sign that his command is still wavering. Arizona counters with Brandon Pfaadt, whose 5.40 ERA and 1.41 WHIP reflect a rougher season, though his most recent outing was encouraging: 5.1 innings, one earned run on June 30 after two abbreviated appearances earlier in the month. The trend there is at least mildly positive, and if he can build on that length, Arizona has a path to keeping this game tight deep into the night.

Earlier in the day, Philadelphia Phillies at Kansas City Royals sets up as the clearest featured mismatch on the board. Cristopher Sánchez has been one of the steadiest arms in this group, carrying a 2.00 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 10.46 K/9 into the start, and his recent line supports that dominance: seven scoreless innings with nine strikeouts on June 30, with the only real blemish in his last three being a five-run outing on June 25. Even with that hiccup, the overall trend is still firmly favorable. Noah Cameron comes in from the opposite direction for Kansas City, and his recent starts underline the concern: 3.2 innings, six earned runs, and no strikeouts last time out, preceded by another five-run start. With the Phillies priced at -197 and the Royals at +175, this game looks exactly like the market says it does unless Cameron suddenly reverses the cold stretch.

Colorado Rockies at Los Angeles Dodgers is notable because Kyle Freeland’s 7.25 ERA makes this a clear mismatch against Eric Lauer, especially in a division rivalry setting. Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals stands out because Shane Drohan’s 3.12 ERA meets a Dustin May profile that has been far less stable at 4.80, giving this division rivalry a sharp form contrast. Houston Astros at Washington Nationals earns attention for the 10.0 total, with Mike Burrows at 5.58 ERA and Miles Mikolas at 5.44 suggesting plenty of traffic on the bases. New York Mets at Atlanta Braves is worth a look because Freddy Peralta’s 4.81 ERA faces the steadier Reynaldo López at 3.31 in another division rivalry, even with New York only a modest underdog.

The pitching spotlight goes to Sánchez, whose 2.00 ERA is the best mark among the featured and notable starters and whose strikeout rate gives him the strongest ceiling on the slate.

It’s a short card, but the top matchups give Monday plenty of pitching angles to watch from first pitch through the late window.
