McLean Gives the Mets a Chance to Disrupt Philadelphia’s Wild-Card Push

Philadelphia arrives at Citi Field with the stronger season, the better record and much more to protect in the standings. The Phillies are 84–68 and hold the second NL wild-card spot, while the Mets sit at 69–83. Yet the opener of this four-game series does not look nearly as one-sided once the starting pitchers are separated from the team records.

Nolan McLean has been the steadier arm. He brings a 3.24 ERA, 3.67 FIP and 1.18 WHIP into Thursday, all comfortably better than Aaron Nola’s 4.69 ERA, 4.85 FIP and 1.37 WHIP. New York also owns the stronger bullpen by ERA, giving the Mets a path to control the game if McLean can carry the matchup into the later innings.

Philadelphia still has the broader edge. The Phillies have won five of the nine meetings with New York this season and have been the more consistent club overall. But this is the start of four straight games between the teams, not a continuation of an old series, and Thursday gives the Mets a real opportunity to make the opening move before Philadelphia can settle into the set.
