Rangers Go for the Sweep as Boston Tries to Stop the Slide

Texas has already taken control of this three-game set, beating Boston 4–2 and 7–3, and Thursday gives the Rangers a chance to complete the sweep at Globe Life Field. The timing makes the matchup more important than the standings alone suggest. Texas has won four straight and sits just one game behind the final AL wild-card spot, while Boston still holds the second wild card despite dropping the first two games of the series.

The Red Sox do have the stronger starting profile. Sonny Gray enters with a 2.76 ERA, 3.45 FIP and 1.17 WHIP over 156.2 innings, while Tyler Alexander has a 3.38 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in a smaller workload. Alexander’s 3.01 FIP, however, gives Texas a reason to believe the matchup can stay close.

If the game turns into a battle of bullpens, Boston owns the clearer season-long edge. Red Sox relievers carry a 3.11 ERA and MLB-best 1.17 WHIP, compared with 4.45 and 1.37 for Texas. That contrast puts pressure on the Rangers to build an early advantage, but their recent form and 42–32 home record make this finale one of the more compelling games on Thursday’s slate.
