Sunday’s 16-game slate has a little of everything, but the clearest betting and pitching angles sit near the top of the board, with two featured matchups built around volatile run environments and very different starter trajectories.

Washington Nationals at Athletics stands out first because the gap between the starters is hard to ignore. Foster Griffin has been one of the steadiest arms on the slate, carrying a 2.77 ERA and 1.02 WHIP, and his recent line shows a pitcher tightening the screws rather than just surviving. Over his last three starts he has allowed only two earned runs across 19 innings, including a seven-inning, nine-strikeout gem on July 8 and seven scoreless with nine punchouts on June 27. That kind of form matters even more in a game with a 10.5 total, because Washington can reasonably expect length and swing-and-miss stuff from its side. Jacob Lopez brings the opposite profile for the Athletics: a 6.83 ERA, 1.79 WHIP, and 5.53 BB/9, with recent outings that suggest both inconsistency and workload risk. He escaped with 1.2 scoreless innings in his last appearance, but that came after allowing four earned in three innings and, earlier, seven earned in two innings. In a matchup labeled for standings stakes, Washington has the much cleaner path if Griffin’s hot streak holds.

Reds at Rockies is the classic Coors Field puzzle: a huge total at 11.0, a favorite with upside, and a starter whose game can swing wildly inning to inning. Hunter Greene’s 6.97 ERA looks ugly, but his recent form is the entire story here. He went from getting tagged for eight earned runs in 3.1 innings on July 4 to overpowering hitters with seven scoreless innings and 12 strikeouts on July 10, which perfectly captures the risk-reward profile created by his massive 16.55 K/9. Ryan Feltner is less explosive but more stable, and his last three starts have alternated between useful and vulnerable: six innings of one-run ball, then six innings of two-run ball with nine strikeouts, then 4.1 innings and four earned last time out. In this park, Greene’s strikeout ceiling is why Cincinnati is favored, but neither side is likely to feel comfortable with a lead.

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox is a true marquee pitching matchup, with Shane McClanahan’s 2.83 ERA facing Sonny Gray’s 2.54 ERA in an elite duel layered with division rivalry intensity. St. Louis Cardinals at Arizona Diamondbacks gets its weight from Eduardo Rodriguez’s 2.29 ERA and the stronger recent form edge over Andre Pallante in a game with standings stakes. Minnesota Twins at Chicago Cubs is notable because Shota Imanaga and Zebby Matthews both enter with enough form to make a tight, meaningful game feel more pitcher-driven than the line suggests. Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Yankees deserves the spotlight simply because Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s 2.85 ERA against Cam Schlittler’s 2.05 ERA is an elite duel on name value and current run prevention alike.

It’s a strong Sunday card, but the biggest edge starts on the mound.
