After Trading Blowouts, San Diego and Los Angeles Get a Decider

There has not been much suspense in the first two games at Dodger Stadium. There has been plenty of reversal.

Los Angeles opened the series with a 7-0 win. San Diego came back the next night and won 5-1. The result is a finale between two clubs that have taken very different routes to the same recent record: both are 15-5 over their last 20 games.

The standings are less balanced. Los Angeles leads San Diego by nine games in the NL West, has won eight of 12 meetings this season and is 51-29 at home.

Nick Pivetta gets the ball for the Padres with some excellent numbers that need to be kept in perspective. His 3.30 ERA and 2.33 FIP have come across only 30 innings and seven starts. Tyler Glasnow has a larger, though still limited, body of work for Los Angeles: 67.2 innings, a 3.46 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 11.6 strikeouts per nine.

San Diego’s best full-season edge appears later in games. Its bullpen owns a 3.46 ERA, fifth in MLB, compared with 3.81 for the Dodgers.
